The first 10 minutes — safety
- If water is near outlets, lights, or the panel, cut power at the breaker before entering
- Do not stand under sagging or stained wet ceilings — they can collapse without warning
- Keep children and pets out of the affected area
- If sewage is involved, wear closed shoes and stay out until pros arrive
Minutes 10–30 — stop the source
- Shut off the main water valve at the meter (turn clockwise until tight)
- If the source is rain through a roof or window, place a bucket and tarp interior containment
- If the source is sewer backup, do not flush or run any drains
- If the source is a specific appliance (washer, dishwasher, water heater), shut off its dedicated valve
Minutes 30–60 — protect and document
- Move furniture, electronics, and valuables to dry areas (or up on foil if you can't move them)
- Lift draperies and rugs off the floor
- Photograph and video every affected room, source, and item — before any cleanup
- Save the damaged source (broken hose, failed valve) if you can — insurers want to see it
- Call (336) 800-8297 for emergency extraction and drying
- Call your insurance carrier to open a claim
What NOT to do
- Don't use a household vacuum to extract water (electrocution and motor damage risk)
- Don't turn on ceiling fans or HVAC if ducts may be wet (spreads moisture and mold)
- Don't lift wet carpet or tile yourself — it's heavier and more contaminated than you think
- Don't start replacing drywall or flooring before extraction and drying are complete
- Don't sign anything from a 'storm chaser' contractor knocking on doors
